Before the original Force witch Allya died, she created a book of advice, based loosely on the Jedi Code, to guide her children in the safe and sane use of the Force. As generations passed and her descendants scattered, each new clan made a copy of Allya's Book of Law to share with their new clansisters and to add as they learned new lessons about the Force.
The central message of The Book of Law is that the magic it describes must always be used wisely-that a Force witch must never surrender to evil, lest she be consumed by it. (In her own way, Allya was warning her followers to avoid the dark side.) But as the book was handed down through the generations, other witches added information to it, including examples of dark side magic. And though they included similar warnings to avoid such uses of the Force, they also unintentionally created enticements for those eager to expand their power.
